The Greenville Candlelight Charity run celebrates its 12th year in 2008.
The "Candlelight Run" has become one of the premier sporting events in the Upstate because of its uniqueness. In 2007, there were almost 1,000 walkers and runners enabling the Greenville Junior Chamber Foundation to donate over $10,000 to it's charities.
In its first year, the Greenville Jaycees held the event in conjunction with WorldFEST '96 with the Greenville Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the Olympic Spirit. The "Torch Run for Hope" benefited Jaycee Camp Hope, a statewide residential camp for citizens with intellectual disabilities.
In its second year, the Run for Hope was a featured event of the Red, White & Blue Festival, and an Independence Day Celebration in Downtown Greenville. During this year, the Jaycees changed the run to a nighttime race and lined our downtown streets with luminaries making it one of the most memorable and enchanting runs in the Southeast.
In 2006, the Greenville Junior Chamber Foundation took over the administration of the event and changed the name of the event to what it is today to better reflect the event. The Candlelight Run has seen enormous growth over the past few year as more and more people learn about this magical event.
Founded in 1922, the Greenville Jaycees have had a huge impact on our community, state and nation. The mission of the Greenville Junior Chamber is to train tomorrow's leaders through community service. Projects of the Greenville Jaycees over its 85 year history include, annexation of Augusta Road, fluoridation of the water supply, building of the Greenville Zoo, the Christmas Shopping Tour for underprivileged kids, and Operation Red T.A.P.E. (Teen Alcohol Prevention and Education) to name a few. Many local businessmen, politicians and residents have been members of this organization for young adults between the ages of 18 and 40. In 2004, the Greenville Junior Chamber was recognized as South Carolina's best chapter for the third year in a row. In 1998 and 2003, the Jaycees were recognized as one of the top 10 chapters in America for its impact upon its local community as well as its members
